PHILOPTOCHOSS

Although the term Philoptochos means friends of the poor, the organization does a wide variety of things Their national financial obligations to the headquarters is now $2700. After meeting that requirement, they continue to raise money to contribute to local families who have suffered losses or tragedies. They even reach outside the Greek Community with aid to Alvis House and Creative Living. As soon as one money- raising project is done, they begin plans for the next one. The annual food booth at the UN Festival in November is always a huge success. They also have annual bake sales and rummage sales. They make and sell martyrika and boubounieres and host several receptions throughout the year. Some members extend the hand of compassion by personally calling on shut-ins. They recently donated $7000 to the Cathedral campaign fund.

The Philoptochos ladies have a reception every Christmas Eve and reception following the Agape service on Easter Sunday.

On May 5, 1985, Fr. Sarris was honored at a gala banquet at the Parke Hotel on Morse Road. It was the 35th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. It was a packet house full of well-wishers. On the dais was an impressive of city and state leaders and clergy, all of whom praised him for his notable contributions to the Columbus community.

 

Over the years of his service to the Columbus community, Fr. Sarris has been feted often by the community. The Philoptochos has a reception each year honoring his name day on January 17, St. Anthony's Day.
